Family Photos on a Camping Weekend
I have worked with this wonderful family twice before. When they came to me with the idea for their next family photoshoot to take place on a camping trip, paying homage to a retro caravan with sentimental value, I was all for it. This van saw them travel Australia wide photographing weddings before Covid and it was also used in their own engagement photoshoot.
From the initial idea it took a little while for the stars to align but we ended up, this Autumn, at a Hipcamp location only an hour and fifty minutes from Brisbane, in the Gold Coast Hinterland. You know you’re in a special place when you don’t get phone reception, so we had to make sure instructions were easy for me meeting them on their second night. When I arrived, I kid you not, paragliders were landing in the paddock that I needed to enter to access the campground. Then I doubly knew it was special!
The session started shortly after I arrived and a last minute outfit change for their youngest led to snacks, upon snacks, upon snacks through the first half of the shoot, I reassured Mum and Dad the biscuit packet was hardly noticeable and not to worry at all. I really do let families go with the flow.
We had a rain shower half way through the session whilst in an open paddock and also…we rolled with it, it was incredibly beautiful! A paraglider landed on a powerline at some stage, thankfully not requiring medical or physical assistance but Energex did come out, all very exciting for the kids.
After sun had set I put the camera down and had the kids help me pitch my hiking tent to sleep in for the night. I got the camera back out for a full moon rise portrait with the van, at marshmallow time and for breakfast platypus watching to really document their trip completely. The beauty of spending the night afforded me this flexibility if the inspiration and moments were there.
Followers of mine would know camping is a large part of my lifestyle, if we aren’t already on a camping trip and I get a sunny weekend with no work, I will take my son hiking our local mountain to camp atop. Documenting this part of their childhood has been so heartwarming and inspiring for me, to live and breathe the values that I hold, it takes effort and it is worth preserving the memory of it all. I’m so glad they’'ll have photos and films of all our trips to enjoy as adults and show their own children someday if they choose parenthood. Now I’m passionate about extending that service to all. Any Journey bookings can take place on a camping trip and I will quote for a small travel and/or camping fee on top. Photos, film or both.
